A building surveyor is one of the team players in the construction industry who mainly deals with the finished product of construction. Building Surveyors are involved in control of building construction, building performance audits, building maintenance and conservation, refurbishment and reuse of buildings. The discipline has many areas of engagement including construction management, building economics, property development, facilities management, costing techniques, health and safety in construction and sustainable construction.
This department was established to meet the growing need of building surveyors in the country that has resulted from rapid growth in the real estate sector due to increased urbanisation. There is need to have construction of compliant, safe and habitable buildings that meet the growing demand for housing and property development and to secure the built environment. The building surveying profession is recognised locally by professional bodies such as the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (Building Surveyors Chapter) and internationally in UK by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The department intends to offer Bachelor of Technology in Building Surveying and Management and is therefore currently working on a curriculum for the program.
