The department of Construction Economics and Management trains professionals in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management. These are key professional areas in the building industry. They are regulated nationally through the Board of Architects and Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (BORAQS) and are professionally organized around the Architectural Association of Kenya, the Institute Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK) and the Institute of Construction Project Managers of Kenya (ICPMK). Internationally they will be accredited by Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The department also trains technicians and technologists in the area of Quantity Surveying and Construction Management with strong emphasis on ‘hands-on’ training which incorporates industry based learning skills and they are regulated by the Institution of Engineering Technologists and Technicians of Kenya
The programmes in the department are packaged to equip graduates at all levels (Diploma, under- graduate and post-graduate) in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management with the necessary skills for employment in multi-disciplinary field of the construction industry, banking sector, Oil sector, Teaching and research, as well as self-employment. Upon graduation, the students who pursued a degree in Quantity Surveying register as practicing quantity surveyors while those taking Construction management become project managers in construction projects. The philosophy in Construction Project Management brings innovation in science and technology applications in course units in economics, accounting, procurement, management and research with particular emphasis to the interrelation between various specialist construction works in a multidisciplinary environment.
